Thoroughbred Horse Racing

Also known as the sport of kings, for most race goers, thoroughbred horse racing is the only race known. It is the most popular form of horse racing throughout the world. Owners of thoroughbred horses normally leave their horses with professional trainers for training for specific types of races. A good trainer will tell you that this is the best training regime for any horse. The owner may also decide to enter the horse, for similar, but not exactly the same, events.

There are many forms of thoroughbred horse races and here are some.

The race for untested horses racing against each other for the first time is called a Maiden Race - a debut race as it were for each. Some enthusiasts find this most exciting, as all the horses are untried. The maiden race will determine the future of each horse, as this will be the first time that it will have the opportunity to show its capability.

Although they will be racing for the first time ever, horses of different ages will participate in this race. To offset any advantage, weights carried by each will be adjusted to even the odds. There are also handicapped penalties for these races.

Horses which have already run their maiden races but which are not yet ready for grand stakes races participate in races called Allowance Races. The purse is higher than that of the maiden race but nowhere near the grand stake races. Mostly, owners use these races to train their horses for the big time.

The most popular among enthusiasts, the Grand stakes racing always involves a great deal of money, purse, stakes and winnings. Enthusiasts attend these races to bet on their favorite horses. The term ‘grand stakes' refers to both the amount of money involved, but also the reputation of the horse. A winner can look forward to going on to greater things, perhaps even stardom among horses!

Another important thing at stake is the dreams and aspirations of thousands of enthusiasts. Bets on this type of a race are for sizable sums. Fortunes can be won or lost by a single horse. This is why thoroughbred horse racing gets such a support from enthusiasts all over the world.

Then there is the Handicap Race which can be considered to be the most fair of all races. All the participating horses are handicapped based on their earlier performances in other races. Theoretically, any of the horses participating can win and all odds are the same. This type of a race attracts many bettors for the equal chance that if offers.

Thoroughbred horse racing is popular due to the amount of cash that is involved. There are however horse lovers who consider that this type of sport is the test of the spirit of these lovely animals. There are horses with the potential to be champions but without the matching spirit to want to win. A sad reflection of real life, in a sport.
