What Affects Betting Odds In Horse Racing

Serious gamblers know that they cannot risk their money on wild goose chases. The outcome of contests like boxing and horse racing does not solely depend on luck. There are other considerations that need to be studied. In the case of horse racing, one such consideration is the study of betting odds. These statistics help them decide on the horse to bet on. The betting odds simply reflect the considered opinion of bookies of the chances that each horse stands of winning.

Let us consider the factors that affect the betting odds.

The reputation of the horses, jockeys and trainers precede any other consideration. Just like any other sports, the reputation of the key players in horse racing enables the setting of odds for the horse. Reputation is earned through many races. A reputed competitor with a significant record of performance will get good odds. The cumulative effect of such past records is what influences the odds. If a horse were relatively unknown, it would be hard to set reasonable odds on its performance.

Before the race, many experts study the physical and emotional condition of the horses and riders to see their level of fitness and fighting spirit. The racing odds given to each horse will reflect their assessment of such conditions. This factor is so important that expensive equipment is used to assess the conditions. Though some consider that this is avoidable extravagance that it is resorted to, it indicates the seriousness of this aspect of horse racing. Too much is literally at stake, on the conditions of the horses in any race.

Very often, the "house", in this case, the track, places bets on the horses to adjust the betting odds. Many bettors place their bets based on the bets placed by the house. For instance, betting on the underdog or the long shot is usually based on such calculations. The bettor can make a great deal of money if the long shot horse wins!

Most regular gamblers however, simply go along with the house. Though the odds of winning are low, chances of making money are high. Betting odds are simply indicators that help in deciding one's bet. For the uncommitted, it is a pointer towards making a commitment. Without the betting odds, it will be extremely difficult to decide on which horse to bet on.
