The Art of Pro Wrestling

In the world of sports entertainment, the wrestling company WWE is beyond a doubt, a giant in the industry. Entertainment for the fans yes, but for the athletes, it’s totally real (or as real as they want). These guys push their bodies each night and yes, serious injuries may occur at any moment if they’re not careful. A broken neck or arm is not unheard of and their job could end tomorrow if they’re not careful. During a main event, cage matches are not uncommon and acting or not, the moves are real and if they don’t time them well, they will suffer the consequences.

You can’t really compare it with Olympic Wrestling. Besides, TV wrestling is designed for entertainment and to give its performers a salary. In the Olympics the wrestlers want a medal (gold if possible) in pro wrestling; they want the championship belt. The other main difference between the two is that pro wrestling matches are fixed, but still entertaining. These guys and gals know their acting and the more the crowd buys into the plot line of the dueling wrestlers, the more exciting the match becomes

In pro wrestling, each fighter has his own style. If they are bad guys, they won’t like being touched or will insult ungrateful fans and get booed. If they want to be cheered, they interact with the fans. Then after that, they all go to patting themselves on the back for a job well done.

But do they get hurt? Although everything is staged, they still fall and get ‘hit’ by a chair sometimes, so they are bound to be hurt. The blood you see in some events is real.

In pro wrestling, the winner is determined when one is able to pin the wrestlers shoulders for three seconds, makes him tap out or throws him out of the ring and hope he doesn’t get up before the ref counts to ten.

The thing that is as funny is the backstage interviews of the loser(s). They will kick, yell, want a rematch etc. Most matches are made so that wrestlers cannot use illegal maneuvers, but in some instance, anything goes. A ‘chokehold’ or a chair in the back is acceptable.

Another critical player in the game is the ref. They have the power and they will say when to end it. That is if their eyes aren’t distracted by a manager outside the ring in order to give his fighter time to recover or to cheat a little (without being caught most of the time).

There are a couple of wrestling shows on television but World Wrestling Entertainment certainly holds the monopoly on the viewings. However, The TNA Company is starting to pick up speed with fans that want matches that are totally hardcore. Let’s just say that some guys from TNA would get disqualified often if they were to wrestle in the WWE. If some contracts have ended they just switch from company to another.

With all that danger, the pro wrestlers are well paid and with good reason. If by accident they get injured, it could be the end of their career. When wrestling comes to mind, the picture that comes to mind might be a guy in a bikini. If this is what you think, turn your TV set to the next WWE viewing and enjoy!
